The King one day decided to hold a competition to find the best artist in his town. The competition would be to paint a rooster but the winner would be allowed to paint the King’s portrait, to be hung in the Hall of Kings and to be rewarded with a hansom sum.
One keen town painter jumped at the chance and started straight away. His Father was proud of his son, but soon his confidence started to fade as he saw his son throw out one after the next of half completed paintings.
When the day arrived for the judging by the king of the paintings the keen painter queued up with the 100’s of other painters outside the palace.
Finally it was the keen painters turn and, as he strode into the central chamber of the palace, the king was shocked and said “How do you expect to win without a painting of a rooster?”
The keen painter replied “I have been practicing all month and now I will paint for you the greatest rooster you have seen” and proceeded to set up his canvas and easel and paint a rooster in 30 seconds.
The King was amazed by the painter’s approach and display of skill and so announced the keen painter the winner of the competition.
Excuses if this story doesn’t match the exact story. My 1st year design studio tutor told me this story, which was a couple years ago.
